Karen Morris

2009 McGuffey winner:

Hotel, Restaurant & Travel Law: A Preventive Approach, 7th ed., by Karen Morris, Norman Cournoyer, and Anthony Marshall, published by Delmar, Cengage Learning. (College Humanities/Social Science category)

Karen Morris:

"Hotel, Restaurant and Travel Law is a college-level textbook for Hospitality majors. The book resulted from what I perceived as a vacuum of good texts in the discipline.  I put on my bold cap and wrote the publisher about my discontent.  I also offered my services to revise the book and included a proposal on changes I would make.  Lucky me – the existing author had retired and was no longer interested in writing.  So began my affiliation with the book.  I have written four editions (fourth through seventh), and am now planning with the publisher for the next. The book’s approach is preventive, advancing the concept that, with the exercise of proper care in the maintenance of facilities and compliance with laws, many lawsuits can be avoided.

In the Hospitality Law discipline this book is distinguished by its use of the case method.  Students’ learning is prompted by exposure to edited decisions from actual court cases. My favorite chapter-end  feature is Preventive Law Tips for Managers.

Topics covered include introduction to law, food liability, alcohol liability, negligence, franchising, employment law, civil rights, contracts, licensing, casinos, airlines and travel agents, and  trademarks and copyrights. In the latest edition, in response to tsunamis and Hurricane Katrina, I added catastrophe planning. Other new topics include laws relevant to spas, theme parks, and condominium hotels. Among the changes for the upcoming addition will be expansion of the topic of insurance."

Thoughts on the award from Karen Morris, author of Hotel, Restaurant and Travel Law: A Preventive Approach, 7th ed.:

"In 2007 the book celebrated the beginning of its fourth decade!   I am thrilled that the book has taught generations of hospitality students how to enhance the safety of their facilities, and minimize the costs and angst of litigation. I am very honored to receive the McGuffey award from my fellow TAA textbook authors."

Thoughts on the award from Anne Orgren, Product Manager, Career & Professional Editorial, Delmar, Cengage Learning:

"We’re honored to have received this award and are pleased to accept it on behalf of lead author Karen Morris and the families of her two co-authors, Norman G. Cournoyer and Anthony G. Marshall. We are all proud of the appreciation that instructors have shown this text for the past three decades, making it a best seller for the Delmar hospitality list. The longevity continues, as planning for the eighth edition is under way."

Advice from Karen Morris, author of Hotel, Restaurant and Travel Law: A Preventive Approach, 7th ed.:

"My advice to other textbook authors is no secret to them. Stay current in your field. Do not scrimp on journals, new books, conferences, newspapers and websites that impact your field. A textbook that has overlooked important new developments will not survive long. Oh yeah, and ya gotta love your subject matter. But that should be a no-brainer. If you are lukewarm about your material, find another pursuit."
