About
TAA
The Text and Academic Authors Association (TAA) is the only nonprofit membership association dedicated solely to assisting textbook and academic authors. TAA's overall mission is to enhance the quality of textbooks and other academic materials, such as journal articles, monographs and scholarly books, in all fields and disciplines, by providing its textbook and academic author members with educational and networking opportunities.
TAA was founded in 1987 by math author Mike Keedy and is now governed by a TAA Council made up of textbook and academic authors. Read about TAA's history.
TAA is
the voice for textbook and academic authors.
TAA developed
a pamphlet entitled, "Stomp
the Comp," that discourages faculty from selling complimentary
copies to book resellers, a practice that is harmful to authors
and contributes to the rising cost of textbooks. TAA has also
written a position statement on the academic value of textbooks,
a Code of Ethics for Authors, and a guide for authors in negotiating
contracts with publishers.
TAA sponsors
the following activities:
Publication
Grants
Authors are eligible for grants of up to $750 to subsidize the cost of publishing scholarly journal articles or books, e.g., the preparation of art-work, having the article formatted to the journal's style, the preparation of photographic images, and straightforward publication costs.
Academic
Authoring Workshops
TAA sponsors workshops on college and university campuses across the country. These workshops are designed to assist academic authors in jump-starting their writing, getting their writing published, finishing their dissertations, and writing effective grant proposals.
Annual
Conferences
TAA holds annual conferences as a way to educate textbook and academic authors on topics such as authoring scholarly journal articles, and books, finishing a dissertation, working with editors, working with coauthors, indexing, legal issues surrounding copyright, negotiating contracts, textbook authoring, and the preparation of ancillary materials, as well as providing them with plenty of opportunities for networking.
Awards
Each year, TAA recognizes the best new textbooks with its Textbook
Excellence Awards ("Textys"), and the textbooks that have shown
the greatest longevity with its McGuffey Longevity Awards ("McGuffeys")

Member Testimonials
"This textbook has really been a winner for me, and winning the TAA Texty Award started this whole domino effect. I can't thank TAA enough."
Jean Lukesh, author of The Nebraska Adventure, which won a 2006 Textbook Excellence Award

Kevin Patton |
"Robert, thanks for the time and obvious effort that you put into presenting your teleconference to us last week. You are a very creative and hardworking author with a lot of good (and hard won) experience. I appreciate your sharing of what you have learned!"
Kevin Patton, Professor of Life Science at St. Charles Community College, and author of several textbooks including Anatomy & Physiology (6th Edition), on his participation in geography textbook author Robert Christopherson's TAA Teleconference, "Tips & Strategies for Successfully Marketing Your Textbook"
"Thanks again for shedding valuable light on textbook authoring and related topics. I've come to find TAA invaluable in my work and I feel a great sense of advocacy and support (and thus was happy to renew my membership!)."
Rebecca F. Plante, Associate Professor of Sociology, Ithaca College

Kimberly
A. Davies |
"I'm
learning so much from the TAA Listserv and the website.
I'm so glad I found TAA."

 Betty
Azar, author of the bestselling Azar
Grammar Series |
"I am a member of TAA because I think there is a need for
an organization that provides information and services for
academic authors. I want to do what I can to help support
other authors. Plus TAA is a source I can go to when I need
insight into certain business aspects of contracts and publishing.
I believe that the more authors share information about
contract negotiations, the stronger authors become as a
group. The publishers do try to hold all the cards when
it comes to contracts. I also like getting bits of information
about the publishing industry -- and ideas about where publishing
might be going in the next twenty years. TAA, in these things
and many others, provides a real service for authors." Betty Azar, author of the bestselling Azar Grammar Series
"I
joined the TAA after attending Tara Gray's informative workshop
'Publish and Flourish' last June. Since then, I have published
three articles in peer-reviewed journals. I just wanted
to acknowledge that I wouldn't have accomplished that without
her help." Victoria
A. Malko, Ed.D., California State University, Fresno
"TAA
teleconferences give much value to being a TAA member. I
also like the information available on the TAA website,
especially the contract information."
Ricardo D. Fierro, Ph.D., Department of Mathematics, California
State University San Marcos
