Negotiating Publishing Contracts for Textbooks and Journal Articles

Presenter: Stephen E. Gillen, Attorney, Wood, Herron & Evans, L.L.P.

Experienced publishing attorney Steve Gillen will talk you through the fundamental principles of negotiation as applied specifically to publishing contracts. A checklist of deal points will help you understand what's important…and why. Role-playing exercises will lead you to the most effective strategies for making the best deal possible.

About the Presenter:

Stephen E. Gillen served as house counsel for South-Western Publishing Company (an educational publisher owned by The Thomson Corporation) prior to entering private practice in 1994. In addition, Stephen has served on copyright and permissions committees with the Association of American Publishers. He has written and spoken nationally on various publishing and copyright topics and teaches a course in Media Business and Law at the University of Cincinnati and a course in Electronic Media Law at the College Conservatory of Music. He currently serves on the TAA Council, the Board of Trustees of Voyageur Media Group, Inc., and is a member of the Authors Guild. Gillen's practice emphasizes publishing and entertainment transactions and disputes, Internet issues, advertising law, computer law, copyrights, trademarks, technology transfer, trade secrets, and related matters. He is admitted to practice in Ohio and before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and the Third Circuit.
