Editing a Collective Volume of Conference Proceedings Moderator: Academics often attend conferences of several days, or participate in associations or societies on an annual basis. Frequently the presentations are interesting and intensely valuable. But a permanent record is often not kept, and recovering a particular presentation that becomes relevant to a participant’s work at a later time is difficult. The collective volume is a mechanism in which conference proceedings can be retained. Editing such a volume is a good way to get a book-length publication, and having a stepwise procedure to follow makes the task manageable. Collective volumes also are used as collections of readings developed around a topic suitable for use as a textbook in a course. In this round table discussion, Richard Hull will share his experiences in editing some 12 collective volumes of his own, and assisting others in editing an additional 12 volumes. He will provide step-by-step instructions in a hand-out and bring copies of some of his volumes as illustrations. About the Moderator: Richard Hull is a Professor Emeritus in Department of Philosophy at SUNY-Buffalo. The second edition of his reader-text Ethical Issues in the New Reproductive Technologies was published by Prometheus Books in 2007. His current research centers chiefly on the biographies and publications of the presidents of the American Philosophical Association from its inception in 1900 to the present day. To date, he has published six volumes, with a seventh volume in press and three more in initial proofreading stages, all now bought out by Prometheus. In addition, he edits three special series of the Value Inquiry Book Series: Werkmeister Studies, Lived Values and Valued Lives, and Histories and Addresses of Philosophical Societies, all for Editions Rodopi. He publishes several book chapters, articles, and reviews each year. Back to Other Roundtable Topics
